Submit your film

The 13th Leiden Shorts festival – formerly known as Leiden International Short Film Experience (LISFE) – will take place in May 2021 in Het Kijkhuis (exact dates to be announced soon).

Films that have been produced after the 1st January 2020 are eligible. We accept films of any genre (fiction, animation, documentary, experimental) and of maximum duration of 30 min. Leiden Shorts does not require premieres, but we will pay attention to the premiere status of the films that are submitted to us. When submitting your film, please specify if it would be an international or national premiere and/or where the film has been screened before and whether it has won any awards.

Exception: Considering that many films did not manage to reach the big screen in 2020 due to COVID-19, we will be more flexible with accepting films which were produced between May 2019 and December 2019. This only applies to films that were not screened at all in cinemas because of corona (if the film was shown at online versions of film festivals but not in the cinemas, they are eligible). If you fall in this category, please indicate this when submitting your film – otherwise the submission will be disqualified.

International Competition (previously: General Award): If the Netherlands are one of the countries of production of the film, it has to have contributed to less than 50% of the production cost. If it has contributed to 50% of more, we reserve the right to put the film in the National Competition.
National Competition (previously: Dutch Award): Co-productions are eligible, however the Netherlands have to have contributed to more than 50% of the production costs. If it has contributed to less than 50%, we reserve the right to move the film in the International Competition
Student Competition: In order to compete in the Student Competition the submitter should provide a proof of enrolment in a school at the time of the production of the film.
Audience Award: All films selected automatically run for the audience award, in addition to any other competition they might be in.

Our Pledge to BIPOC Filmmakers

Creating a space where a diversity of voices can shine is essential to what we do at Leiden Shorts. There is so much transformative power that can happen when we use the power of film and the power of representation to highlight the stories, experiences, challenges, injustices, and successes of BIPOC artists around the globe.

That is why from 2020 onwards, we are offering a 50% submission fee discount to BIPOC filmmakers who would like to submit their films. We will also consider granting waivers or discounts to filmmakers who cannot afford our submission fee. To receive your discount, please send us an email directly to submissions@leidenshorts.nl.

We want to ensure that we actively work to amplify stories from BIPOC filmmakers, and to continue to hold ourselves accountable for the work we do as an international short film festival.
