‘Reduce, reuse, recycle’ – one of the hallmark phrases of late 20th century environmental activism: it is an iconic slogan that forced individuals to reconsider how they could change their consumption habits to help protect the planet. This phrase, however, overlooks the core of the issue; that over-consumption is enabled by over-production. ‘Reduce, reuse, recycle’ cleverly places the responsibility on the individual consumer.
This session takes a look at the commodification of the natural world, exploring links between production and consumption. It examines how animals, water, clothing, and workers become controlled, manipulated, and exploited by our global capitalist economic system. Moving beyond mere content to an aesthetic level, many of the short films in this session draw upon the reuse and recycling of old footage, images, and icons as a way of exploring a potential new form of recycled cinema.
