In 2017, ‘Fake news’ was named word of the year, and the term has become a household term when discussing media. How can we distinguish between fact and fiction? Is the division as clear as it’s made out to be, where is the divide between true and fake? In this session, we explore phenomena from technological possibilities and socio-economic origins to the influence on mainstream news reporting, sketching an eerie portrait of our potential future.
After the screening, Mark Reid will give a presentation about the concept of fake news, how to recognize it and what to do about it. Reid is a journalist at Leids Universitair Weekblad Mare with a background in biology and science communication. He has researched the effect of fake news and worked as a fact-checker with Nieuwscheckers.
