GENERAL BOARD MEMBER
(f/m/x | part-time | volunteer)
Leiden Shorts was established in 2009 as a platform for short films and has since grown into one of the most important short film events in the Netherlands. We envision Leiden Shorts as an alternative creative space for national and international filmmakers to showcase their distinct voices by exploring the power of the film medium. Currently Leiden Shorts (Stichting Cinemaclub Leiden)s looking for:
- a General Board Member with expertise in, or affinity with, managing and running film festivals or similar cultural events, and
- a Treasurer to the Board with affinity with the cultural scene in the Netherlands.
Both roles require a commitment of 1-2 hours per week on average.
The board currently has 4 members. In 2024 the term of two current board members is coming to an end. The festival is organised by a diverse and dedicated team of emerging film professionals working on a semi-volunteer basis, headed by a Festival Director. The involvement of the board is non-executive. Board members will support the growth and development of the dynamic and transforming organization and check the financial status of the festival.

- You are available to dedicate time to board meetings (on average: every 6 weeks) and week to week internal communication within the Board.
- You have an affinity with film and the festival sector and willing to commit yourself to help Leiden Shorts grow into a renowned festival in Leiden and an internationally leading short film festival.
- You identify yourself with the foundation’s missions, values, and goals, especially those related to social impact, cultural diversity, and education through film.
- You are a strategic thinker and have problem-solving skills to contribute to the long-term development and sustainability of the festival.
- You strike a good balance between involvement and distance, you can supervise the broad implementation of the foundation’s mission and policy and can think strategically and practically about these points.
- You know how to find the balance between critical opposition and constructive collaboration. High ethical standards guide your decision-making.
About the board
The board of the foundation that runs Leiden Shorts (Stichting Cinemaclub Leiden) occupies itself primarily with supporting and advising the Festival Director and, indirectly, the rest of the festival team. Most of this support takes place during board meetings that happen every 5-6 weeks for an hour and a half. Board members also engage in occasional one-to-one support sessions for team members on topics they may have specialized knowledge in and attend (parts of) the festival. The board also controls, in particular financially, as it is bound by a set of formal and legal responsibilities each individual member has towards the foundation. We aim for board members to commit to a four-year tenure. As ‘ANBI-status’ organisation, Dutch law prohibits our board members from receiving any type of remuneration other than the reimbursement of expenses.
Interested?
Please send your motivation letter to Myriam Vandenbroucke (Secretary to the board) via myriam@leidenshorts.nl. You can also reach out to Myriam in case you have questions. For these vacancies we maintain a rolling deadline, which means that they remain open until we have found suitable candidates.
