Call for REVIEWERS
We are looking for Reviewers to join the Pre-selection Committee for Leiden Shorts 2024
Leiden Shorts was established in 2009 as a newborn platform for short films and has since grown into one of the most important short film events in the Netherlands. We envision Leiden Shorts as an alternative creative space for national and international filmmakers to showcase their distinct voices by exploring the power of the short film medium. By considering cinema as a tool for social change, we aim to spotlight underrepresented voices and provide space for daring narratives and unconventional forms to take shape.
The pre-selection committee is responsible for the first screening, reviewing and evaluation process of the films submitted to Leiden Shorts. Through individual motivations and collective discussions, the reviewers will be the first to determine which films will be further considered in the selection process for the festival’s competitions.
Profile
- Loves (short) films and is ready to watch a large number of films (approx. 200 in total)
- Interested in social-political issues and current trends
- Independent and able to manage their own workload
- Capable of critically viewing and evaluating films from all over the world and from any genre
- Strong command of English and good writing skills, with the ability to write comprehensive film reviews in English
- Willing and available to attend monthly meetings with the rest of the pre-selection committee
- No previous experience is required
Scope & timing
- Ca. 5 weekly hours
- Period: January – February, 2024
- Volunteer position including a symbolic fee
- Assignments are mostly done remotely
- Availability to start from January 8, 2024

Call for FILM PROGRAMMER
We are looking for a Film Programmer to join the Programming Team for Leiden Shorts 2024
Leiden Shorts was established in 2009 as a newborn platform for short films and has since grown into one of the most important short film events in the Netherlands. We envision Leiden Shorts as an alternative creative space for national and international filmmakers to showcase their distinct voices by exploring the power of the short film medium. By considering cinema as a tool for social change, we aim to spotlight underrepresented voices and provide space for daring narratives and unconventional forms to take shape.
The programming team consists of five programmers, including the Head of Programme. The programmers play an instrumental role in shaping the festival’s vision, determining the selection of films, and curating the film programmes according to the artistic, aesthetic and thematic qualities of the films, while creating meaningful bridges between them.
Through this new position, our aim is to foster diversity within our team and the curation process. We seek individuals from various backgrounds and communities to contribute to the richness and inclusivity of our collective expertise.
Profile
- Loves (short) film and is ready to watch a large number of films
- Capable of critical viewing and evaluation of films from all over the world and from any genre
- Demonstrable experience within the cultural field, preferably in film festivals
- Has a broad cultural, social, and political interest, is able to look beyond one narrative and to make connections between different films, themes, and issues
- Able to articulate views and thoughts on films and is comfortable with sharing and discussing them in a group
- Has a good eye for identifying originality
- Works well with tight deadlines
Requirements
- Watching and reviewing a considerable amount of short films on a weekly basis (approx. 350 in total)
- Willing to research and propose creative thematic film programmes and contribute to the parallel events
- Representing Leiden Shorts at international (film) festivals and events
- Attending weekly meetings with the rest of the programming team and additional meetings with the entire festival team
- High command of written and spoken English
- Attending Leiden Shorts in June 2024 and taking part in preparations
- Holding introductions and moderating Q&As during the festival days

- Period: January – June, 2024
- Volunteer position including monetary compensation
- Assignments are mostly done remotely
- Availability to start from January 8, 2024

VOLUNTEER GENERAL
You haven’t found something for you but you would still like to help…
We’re always looking for new volunteers to join the team as coordinators, side events curators, and administrative and financial tasks. No particular experience is required for these positions, as long as you are passionate (about film), motivated, independent and open-minded.
